Wine Tasting

A unique experience for both wine lovers and the uninitiated travelers.

The locals say that Santorini has more wine than water. Since antiquity, water shortage has been perhaps the island’s most serious problem. Irrigation and drinking needs were met by wells and rain water collected in cisterns, while nowadays water importation serves as the solution.

But, as compensation to that, the fertile volcanic soil produces Santorini’s largest export: the local distinct white wine, of international fame, is the pride among other excellent farming products of the area, such as the small, juicy tomatoes, the white-skinned eggplants, the fava beans with their unique taste and aroma.

The excellent growing conditions - high daytime temperatures and humidity at night, along with the blessed volcanic earth- produce 36 varieties of grape. (Local farmers form the vines into the shape of baskets by twisting them, thus protecting them from the harsh Aegean winds.)
